MANILA, Philippines — The number of firecracker and fireworks-related injuries logged nationwide from December 22 until New Year’s Day is now at 340, the Department of Health (DOH) announced on Wednesday.

The figure is 34 percent lower compared to the 519 cases recorded in the same period last year.

A total of 239 cases involved individuals aged 19 years and below, while 101 cases involved people ages 20 years and above. 

Jittering donkey carts have long been essential for aftermarket transport from southern Karachi’s wholesale bazaars, nested in narrow streets preventing regular vehicles from accessing their trove of wares.

Of the 34o cases reported, so far, 299 involved men, while 41 of the victims were women.

Based on DOH’s Tuesday data, 202 injuries were caused by illegal firecrackers such as boga, 5-star, and piccolo.

The public was advised by DOH to wash firecracker-related wounds, cover them with sterilized gauze bandages or clean cloth, apply pressure on the wound to stop bleeding and call 911 or 1555 for assistance. 

Those who suffered injuries near the eyes are advised to wash the affected area with warm water and not ice; avoid touching the affected part and proceed to the nearest hospital for an anti-tetanus shot. 

Those who accidentally swallowed firecrackers should take raw egg whites (six to eight pieces for children and eight to 12 for adults) before going to the nearest hospital.
